Carey on FOX News: Rush to Electric Vehicles Will Jeopardize U.S. National Security
Ret. Captain Bob Carey joined Fox News’ America’s Newsroom today to discuss a recent letter he sent to President Biden and the Environmental Protection Agency raising the alarm about EV policies. In the letter, Carey and 16 other retired military officials outlined their concern that President Biden’s push to rapidly transition to electric vehicles would increase our reliance on China.
In the interview with Fox News host Dana Perino, Carey explained how EPA’s recent tailpipe emissions standards would all but force Americans to adopt EVs, while not addressing supply chain issues. “You don’t make transitions like this by taking away fossil fuel cars. And the way this regulation is being put forward… is not going to make us any more capable of handling electric vehicles,” said Carey.
Carey also discussed strong concerns about China’s control over key components of electric vehicles. The Washington Examiner noted in their coverage of the letter that, “Materials that EVs require are largely dependent on components made in China and materials processed by China, such as lithium-ion batteries.” This is cause for alarm for military experts who understand the consequences of the United States becoming overly reliant on foreign countries for important goods and materials.
Carey and other signers wrote that an increased dependence on China for EV parts and materials “will undoubtedly open the U.S. up to economic manipulations by China, identical to what Russia is doing with Ukrainian grain exports and a major threat to our national security.”
